Donkey Kong   Game Boy / Color

Much More Depth Than You'd Expect    4/5 stars

Donkey Kong for the original Game Boy has a surprising amount of depth for a handheld game. In this seriously upgraded version compared to the NES and arcade version, Mario has increased abilities, there's more of a puzzle element to it, and there's many more levels to get through.

It's a familiar sight, Donkey Kong has taken the princess hostage and you must climb though levels to get to her. However, in this version of Donkey Kong, Mario has more abilities. You can swing on ropes to launch yourself up and across the screen. There's still the hammer to take out enemies and walls, but now there are also items that can create ladders and floors to walk on. This adds more of a puzzle feel to the game than just your typical platformer. You must figure out how to use these items to get to the end which adds some depth to the game.

There are 9 worlds with at least 8 stages in each giving you hours of chasing Donkey Kong. The Game Boy does allow you to save, allowing you to play short intervals, ideal for a hand held game. Most of the time you must obtain a key and carry it to a door to advance through a level, but there are times you must get to Donkey Kong by dodging his obstacles. And, at the end of each world, you must take out Donkey Kong by hurling objects at him.

The graphics and music are simple and clean. The levels aren't overly complicated and usually aren't too difficult to figure out. It's easy to obtain extra guys by getting the 3 extra items on each level giving you more puzzles to solve, too.

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. Not only is it one of the best original Game Boy titles, it's also one of the best Donkey Kong games out there.

4/5

This is a great game. I'm not sure why, but I started each of the three save slots in my copy and played them each to the final save with 99 lives. I guess I had more free time as a 12 year old.
