Rail shooters rarely work because with so little control they tend to be not much fun to play. The exceptions to the rule are Panzer Dragoon and Star Fox, mainly because of their lovely visuals and engaging set pieces. The original Star Fox was very much a case of style over substance but the style was enough to carry it over the line into playability and the same is true of Assault. It may be shallow but it's so, so pretty.
