Fez   PC (Steam)

3D in a 2D World    4/5 stars

Fez is an indie platformer game where you play as a small creature named Gomez. He discovers his 2D world isn’t actually 2D. Take Gomez out on an adventure to discover the 3D world, collect cube pieces to build full cubes, and solve puzzles.

Presentation
Fez has classic pixelated look reminiscent of early platformer games. With varying themes and music across the game, you won’t be disappointed.

Gameplay
The uniqueness of Fez sets it apart as a platformer. It’s 3D in a 2D world, allowing you to rotate the view 90 degrees at time, but never leaving the 2D platformer experience. This results in having a puzzle nature to the game, because you must think in both 2D and 3D to make your way through levels, find cube pieces, and solve puzzles. Find all 32 golden cubes and discover all 32 anti-cubes and four artifacts if you wish to 100% the game.

Originality
Fez is definitely original, 3D in a 2D world designed by Phil Fish. With all the drama around the game, we can feel lucky this game exists, but Fez 2 will never come to fruition. I also recommend watching Indie Game: The Movie, which features Fez and other indie developed games.

Replay Value
Since much of this game is collecting cube pieces, and solving puzzles, there isn’t much of a replay value once you find everything. Once completing the game, you’ll open New Game +, which includes first person view which let’s you solve even more puzzles. In a way, it’s just a continuation of the game to 100% the game.

Recommendation
A worthwhile play to experience the unique design and gameplay that really doesn’t exist anywhere else. Enjoy the game. The only main complaint I have about Fez is it is nearly impossible to 100% the game without looking things up on the Internet. In fact, a couple of the puzzles in Fez took a long time for the greater community to solve. Don’t hesitate to look a few things up or you’ll go crazy trying to get all the achievements.
