Dr. Luigi   Nintendo Network

Same Old Dr. Mario with a New Shape Added To It.    3.5/5 stars

Dr. Luigi has a pretty hefty price tag, but the new twist to this classic game is worthwhile for gamers fond of the original Dr. Mario.

Dr. Luigi has the same game play as all of the versions of Dr. Mario that came before it. If you don't know what that entails, here's a brief description. It's a puzzle game where on each level you have to try and eliminate all the viruses in a bottle. Pills are dropped from the top and can have any combination of the colors blue, red, and yellow. You then rotate the pills and move them onto viruses, trying to get 4 in a row to get the rid of the virus. If pills get piled to the top, the game is over.

In Dr. Mario, the pills that drop are split in half, with each half having the ability of being any one of the 3 colors. In Dr. Luigi, two pills drop at once instead of one. These two pills are connected and drop in a "L" shape. When you land these L shaped pills onto the viruses below, one pill might separate from the other depending on if there's any other pills below it.

Now, I know what you're saying. You don't think this is much of a difference from the original Dr. Mario. Technically, you're right. But, this dramatically alters the way you play the game. It's much more difficult planning on where your spare pills will drop causing you to deal with more headaches along the way. It's harder to get rid of extra pill build up below because you now have double the pills dropping every time. Needless to say, it's harder to clear levels and if you're an experienced Dr. Mario gamer, you will have to alter your way of thinking to have success in this game mode.

If you've read this and think that you'd rather just have the old Dr. Mario than this new crazy game mode, don't worry. The classic Dr. Mario is also included in this game. That way if you want to go back to having success ripping through levels the original way, you still can.

If you've downloaded and played Dr. Mario Online Rx for the Wii this will be very familiar. Dr. Luigi is pretty much that game with the new game mode added. That still means you can play people online and against one of your friends. Unfortunately, this game still does not have 3 or 4 player mode. It's a shame that if you every want to try a 4 player Dr. Mario game you will have to go back to the Nintendo 64 version to do it. Why I have no idea.

This game is $15 so it's not exactly cheap for a downloadable game. I emphasize this because really this game is the Wii version with a game mode added. Don't expect any other additional content. This is a great game to play online or with a friend. This game will also challenge you to think in a different way too. However, I'm not exactly sure if the price is worth it.

3.5/5
