As it stands at this time for me:

1) Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (The most engrossing experience I've had in a video game in a long time.)

2) L.A. Noire (Near flawless execution and still the best looking game I've ever played)

3) Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Fun mix of stealth and action with a good story to boot)

4) Mass Effect 2 (despite the flaws, still a great "RPG" with a diverse cast of characters and quite a bit of content).

Now, I haven't played a lot of the big titles (Uncharted 3, Arkham City, whatever Assassins Creed they're up to now) but I think my choices are solid. What say the rest of the masses?

I confess, I haven't played many games that'll be up for GOTY honors.  A lot of my gaming this year went to PC games (StarCraft II and Dragon Age II) or catching up on console games that were a little older or just not contenders.

If I'd played Mass Effect 2 on a console, I'm sure that would have been a legit entry.  I've never played a game that did the things surrounding the actual gameplay so well.  Plus, playing as an adept kept the game from being a run of the mill shooter.

I'm about 30 hours into Skyward Sword right now, so I have a feeling that'll be my defacto nominee, as it's going quite well.  I'd like to have played and finished Bastion, Arkham City, Super Mario Land 3D, L.A. Noire, and Deus Ex (though I'd have played Deus Ex on PC as well).

But alas, this was kind of a busy year, so I got almost none of that done.

I sure do know what my surprise of the year was though:  Motoheroz.

Chris, you PlayStation whore!

My nominees are:

Skyward Sword (despite not having played it yet)
LittleBigPlanet 2
Xenoblade Chronicles (despite the game being frighteningly overrated)

I fully admit it - the only Nintendo game that might make the list is Skyward Sword, but I probably won't get to that for quite awhile. Xenoblade Chronicles is technically not coming out until next year in the U.S. - so maybe it will make my 2012 list.

Of course I love the PS3 and I'm proud of it - the Xbox 360 isn't even on my radar, so I have no idea if any of their first-party titles should be considered dare anyone defend the system?

LittleBigPlanet 2, without a doubt.  It has those platform roots that I like.  Gran Turismo 5 is fun, but I admit it didn't seem that they made any vast improvements over 4, just better graphics.  Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim looks impressive, but buggy equals thumbs down for me.  Chris has yet to exceed the 50 hour mark that starts to cause problems for 1/3 of PS3 users. 12/15/2011

Yeah, Nick, I'd have nominated Skyrim as well (despite not having played it) if it weren't for the bugs.

Doesn't Bethesda understand that they could make their customers happier if they released games that actually work properly?

No, Nelson, they don't.  And they don't have to.

At this point bugs in Bethesda games have taken on a life of their own.  They're so insane that people are reveling in them, posting YouTube videos of them, going to forums to share their favorites.  Co-workers come in every day and share their latest and greatest bugs and laugh about it.

Bethesda has been so lazy and sloppy in their coding for so long it's officially become part of enjoying the game.  You've heard people talk about movies so bad that they're good?  Guess what, Bethesda games are so buggy the fans think they've become more fun.

Every person out there putting their foot down in protest to prove a point is being drown out by 3 people searching YouTube for hilarious new glitches after they stop playing for the night.

Yeah, I know some people subscribe to the concept of "so bad it's good," but I'm not one of them. Bad is bad. Period.

And the PS3 version's main bug isn't something that anyone could consider fun. Backwards dragons? Fun. Guy running on his horse's back? Fun. Zero frames/second? Not fun.

Hey, I agree.  A game that crashes all the time just isn't fun to play.
But all those bugs somehow are getting filed under the same category as flying mammoths and floating NPCs.  Just look at the average scores.  90% of "professional" reviewers are saying "Yeah this game has bugs, but...." and then proceeds to not actually hold the bugs against the game, somehow.  Even if they make the game hard to play, somehow they get treated the same way as quirky little clipping glitches.

Bethesda has worn down the industry, and that's all that matters.

I haven't run into any "fun" or any game-ending bugs as of yet. Every hour I play apparently is driving me toward a frame rate issue, but even if it does, it doesn't cancel out the sheer enjoyment I've already got out of the game. Unless I hit an Oblivion game-ending bug (which is, in all probability, entirely possible) I won't back down from my ranking. 12/15/2011
