Probably second only to Ghosts and Goblins in the amount of rage it inspired in my early gaming years. This is another game I don't think I ever passed, - was that Frankenstein guy level 3? I remember him and a level with leaping fish guys - anyway, I think 4 or 5 was the best I could manage. Fun, but frustrating.

The play control was a bit lame but it didn't matter. You got to go through complex levels using axes and other weapons to beat up on mummies, madusas, and the grim reaper. The whip was your most powerful weapon. I still really like to play this game. Lot of fun but really hard.

Hard, But Fun

Castlevania's story, music, bosses, and theme made this a great game. The idea of invading a castle with a whip to take out Dracula was a top notch idea. The play control is hated by a lot of people because it doesn't follow the Mario formula. You either jump short or far, no controlling Mr. Belmont after he gets in the air. It's annoying and frustrating at times, but the design of the game is based on it and you can get use to it.

The bosses are memorable. It includes: Frankenstein, Death, and Dracula. The secondary weapons help take this game beyond other platformers. It adds strategy, especially with boss fights by deciding if you should have the cross, axe, holy water, etc.

Castlevania is another one of those difficult NES games, but you do have unlimited continues and it...
