Castlevania: Bloodlines   Sega Genesis

Leaves You Wanting More    3/5 stars

Castlevania: Bloodlines is what you'd expect from an early generation console Castlevania game, but it has limited levels and will leave you wanting more.

This Castlevania game takes a bit of a different route when it comes to level design. While the levels will have a familiar feel to them, they don't all take place in the same castle. You travel around Europe to various countries taking out Dracula's minions.

Also, this is one of the few Castlevania games that gives you a chance to choose a character to play with for the game. You can play as John Morris who uses the classic whip, or Eric Lacarde who uses a lance.

If you've played other Castlevania titles you won't encounter many surprises. You upgrade your weapon to lengthen it and increase its strength. There are secondary weapons as well like the axe, boomerang, and holy water.

The play control isn't the best, which also usually happens in a Castlevania game. Sometimes jumping from one platform to another can be problematic and attacking can sometimes be slow causing you to get hit. The graphics aren't stellar either, I expected more from the Sega Genesis.

There is variety when it comes to the levels, there just aren't that many of them. You'll encounter moving staircases, rising water, and other unique obstacles. There are mini bosses at the half way point of all stages, all of which are pretty fun to figure out and take down.

The music is solid, the bosses are fun and there's the level of difficulty I expect from Castlevania games (you're only given 9 guys total to get through the game). Overall, it's your typical Castlevania game. It's fun to play, but not amazing by any means.

3/5
