Clicker Heroes   PC (Steam)

Once You Start You'll Never Stop    3.5/5 stars

Do you like clicking? Sure you like clicking, who the hell don't? But if you're like me, you like clicking just as fast as possible. That's why I recommend Clicker Heroes - it's free to download, easy to play and goes on forever. Plus, it plays itself when you're away. That's right - you don't even have to click (much), just let it run, check it every now and then and watch that sweet, sweet gold pile up. Play a few levels, give your heroes a boost and come back days (or weeks or even months) later and do it again. Play a little - play a lot - it's about as casual as you can get but addicting as all hell.

Presentation: Cute. The monsters are cute (even when you kill them), There is a decent variety to these enemies - blobs of goo, pink flamingos, various turtles - all with punny names. Every five levels gives you a boss (usually bigger versions of the basic enemies). The heroes are colorful (static, but well designed). And the level backgrounds are pretty standard, but are at least somewhat varied. For such a simple game, at least it gives you something nice to look at while furiously clicking away.

Story: Nope.

Gameplay: The name Clicker Heroes pretty much spells it out. You click enemies to deal damage. Enemies drop gold. You have heroes you unlock as you spend that gold. Each hero has a set of moves that lets them deal more damage. Each hero you unlock does more damage than the hero before it and costs more gold to level up. Even without clicking your heroes have a set amount of DPS they do - meaning enemies will die whether you click or not (hence the always earning gold even when you're not "playing"). Certain heroes unlock special abilities you can use and have to recharge (anywhere from five minutes to seven hours) - all of which give you the ability to deal more damage or collect more gold. Every five levels you unlock a boss - kill the boss to advance to the next area and so on and so on. The gold you earn, DPS you deal and enemies' health - it all grows at the same rate and it grows quickly - millions, billions, trillions - I don't even know if there is a cap. As I said, the games is as simple as it gets, but you just don't want to stop playing.

The game is free but does feature some optional things you can buy. The gems do drop on their own (slowly) over time. These all you to speed up time, unlock gilded heroes or gain heroes souls when you ascend the world. Now, gilded heroes are simply re-skinned versions of the standard heroes that deal even more damage. You can gild a heroes multiple times - defeating certain boss enemies allows you a free gilded hero on occasion. Ascending the world essentially resets your progress (you do get to keep your gilded heroes) and you gain hero souls in the process. The higher your current level, the more hero souls you gain. Hero souls essentially grant you the power to do more damage (+10% for each soul) and summon an ancient that gives you various abilities (at the cost of some of your hero soul DPS percentage). I haven't ascended yet, but apparently to do real damage, you have to do this multiple times (also why the game never seems to truly end).

Replayability: You never stop playing - though the game is flash based and dependent on cookies (though it has a save feature to counteract this should you toss your cookies). You can reset the game permanently (you monster). But mostly it's, click, kill, earn, level up, repeat.

Overall: So simple, yet so addictive.

Presentation: 3/5
Story: N/A
Gameplay: 3/5
Replayability: 5/5
Overall (not an average): 3.5/5
