Far Cry 5 :: Video Game Review (4/5 Stars) Mon, 22 Jul 2019 23:35:02 -0500 “Far Cry 5” is, ironically, the 12th game in the long-running ‘Far Cry’ franchise, which was started shortly before the advent of the dire 7th Generation, in 2004, by a small-time developer called Crytek, but published by that French hive of scum and villainy known as Ubisoft. Soon after the release of the original “Far Cry,” Ubisoft simply bought out the IP and has been developing th... read more Duke Nukem: Time to Kill :: Video Game Review (4/5 Stars) Fri, 19 Jul 2019 12:21:54 -0500 The Duke goes fully polygonal in a third person incarnation that's like Tomb Raider but with bad puns, casual sexism and lots and lots of bullets. The time travel factor gives it some nicely varied levels with lots of secrets to discover and the aiming system is nice and accurate making for a fun blaster. Probably the best Duke Nukem game I've played. Descent :: Video Game Review (5/5 Stars) Thu, 18 Jul 2019 13:30:24 -0500 Hybrid of a Doom-like FPS and a 3D space shooter, Descent takes the idea behind Id's seminal shooter and runs with it to glorious effect. Explore atmospherically lit and tortuous mazes of tunnels infested with robotic adversaries to find the reactor core, destroy it and escape before everything is blown to kingdom come. The tunnels look quite similar and the later, larger mazes can be a little di... read more Destruction Derby 2 :: Video Game Review (4/5 Stars) Wed, 17 Jul 2019 14:54:50 -0500 Fixing everything that was wrong with the original game, DD2 is faster, has better handling and more open race tracks making for a fun smash and crasher. The collision detection is occasionally dubious and the point award system inconsistent making success a bit of a lottery, but despite that it's still one of the most enjoyable racers on the system. Colony Wars: Vengeance :: Video Game Review (3.5/5 Stars) Wed, 17 Jul 2019 14:49:17 -0500 The Wing Commander-inspired saga continues as you take to the stars to inflict bloody vengeance on the League of Worlds. Attractive to look at and a nice attempt at variety, but the evolving story aspect doesn't quite work because many of the missions are either too hard or too easy, meaning that you rarely encounter a different story path even if you try. A good, solid space bound 3D shooter non... read more Wipeout :: Video Game Review (4.5/5 Stars) Wed, 17 Jul 2019 14:42:51 -0500 As impressive as Ridge Racer was at the time, it was this title that really captured the imagination; the fully 3D tracks that rolled and looped around a beautifully realised futuristic world, the cutting edge design by Designer's Republic, the CD quality music by "proper" bands and the physics that had a real sense of sped, gravity and momentum. Perhaps a little unforgiving for novices - the fin... read more Trine :: Video Game Review (4/5 Stars) Wed, 10 Jul 2019 18:38:04 -0500 A pretty 2D platform game that expands on the idea behind 16 bit game The Lost Vikings in which different characters with different skills are utilized to overcome puzzles. Shades of Oddworld can also be seen in the platform/puzzle format as well as its general quirkiness and sense of humour which is no bad thing. It is possible to bodge or fluke your way through from time to time, but that actua... read more Soldner-X: Himmelssturmer :: Video Game Review (3.5/5 Stars) Wed, 03 Jul 2019 13:20:35 -0500 Nicely presented old school shooter with a few niggling flaws. The power-up system is unintuitive and the packed screen filled with hordes of enemies and laser fire can be overwhelming, leading to plenty of deaths before you even know what's happening. Experienced and patient shoot 'em up fans may find it an attractive and challenging shooter, but it's a little too tough for the casual gamer. Jotun :: Video Game Review (2/5 Stars) Sat, 29 Jun 2019 21:55:49 -0500 “Jotun” is the inaugural effort by Montreal, Canada-based Indie developer, Thunder Lotus Games. First announced in early 2015 and released later that same year, “Jotun” was the result of meager crowdfunding combined with an endowment from Canada’s government (a government that actually appreciates the arts, unlike ‘Murrica’s). When I first laid eyes on “Jotun,” I immediately wan... read more Daytona USA :: Video Game Review (3.5/5 Stars) Thu, 27 Jun 2019 11:34:43 -0500 Arcade perfect conversion of the classic racing game which was probably more beloved at the time for its linked multiplayer cabinets than the actual game itself. The handling is a little clumsy, there are only 3 tracks and 1 car to choose from and the music is horrendous, but it fixes all of the problems with the Saturn version. Enjoyable but limited in the same way as most of the old Sega arcade... read more
