So, did anyone follow the news at the Game Developer's Conference?
I'm getting really fed-up with the big game makers focusing so much on handhelds. The reason little time-waster games like Angry Birds are successful is because they are little timewasters. Portable gaming needs to be bite-sized with easy pick-up/put-down capability.
Putting an all new Mario title, as well as remakes of N64 games on a handheld doesn't make sense unless the developers want people to sit around their houses playing with handhelds instead of real consoles.
This is partly why Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and Dragon Quest 9 sucked compared to their predecessors: epic games don't work on a non-epic platform. Thus instead of epicness, we get grindiness, random dungeons, and random lootz.
To make it even worse, devs are pricing handhelds in the home console range. $250 for a 3DS with no TV out capability? LOL! |

As I've say countless hours entering DS data, I can honestly say that the games that have interested me the most are the ones that, as you say, are more epic in scale, but in turn means that you have to spend hours with cramped hands and squinted eyes. I agree - a TV out option would be nice, while still having the capability to haul the thing on trips or just waste time.
I've pretty much given up on any handheld market and sticking with the major systems. I can always hope whatever fad game has hit the market will come out as DLC eventually. Unless they find a way to beam it directly into my brain, I'm sticking with consoles. |

Got to keep the kids happy by throwing a hand held they can play in the car. Just look at all the crappy games available for the DS. But yes, the price of the hand helds are way to high. |

According to Wikipedia, the original Game Boy Brick launched at $90. That was back when the NES Super Special Awesome Pack went for $180 (included Zapper and PowerPad).
So, a Nintendo handheld should be half the price of a Nintendo console. Wii was $250, so 3DS should be $125.
It would be fine if handhelds ONLY had crappy little iPhone games or licensed garbage based on Nickelodeon shows. But Nintendo (and Sony) occasionally throw a potentially-good game on there that gets ruined by being handheld. |
