I did give the homebrew channel a good rating!    It was kind of a strange trip loading about 1200 NES games and another 200 or so SNES games all with a 2GB SD card onto my wii.   The fact that those NES games are UNDER .5 MB is just shocking to see.. most are like 20 kb or something. 03/22/2011

Yeah, it's amazing how much devs could cram into a few K back in the day.

Of course, you might be surprised to learn that most Wii games, once all the filler data has been scrubbed out, are under 1 GB. WiiSports is something like 320 MB.

Yup, I'm aware...  sounds like someone knows their way around the torrents as well as I do. 03/22/2011

Set sail with the privateers! Arrrr! Actually, even though I haven't taken that much advantage of it, I'm incredibly grateful for the Homebrew as it gives me a way to relive the past - as I sold my entire NES collection and most of my super NES off for monies I didn't have as an unemployed non-forward-looking child. As for Baseball Stars - I will have to investigate. Even though sports are not generally my thing, I'll give a fair shake to any game. 03/22/2011

Nah, I don't torrent games. I just have a strong aversion to rebuying games I already own or paying more than a pittance for 20-year-old ROMs that should be Public Domain by now. I experimented with USB-loading for my legally-purchased Wii games for a while to save wear and tear on the optical drive, but creating the backup seems to make the Wii work just as hard as playing the game, so I scrapped that idea. 03/23/2011

Well, zam, I gave Baseball Stars a try last night. It wasn't the game I was thinking of, but I still didn't like it. I lost my first game in one inning, as I struck out immediately and couldn't catch squat, so the computer team got 10 runs in their first at-bat.

I found the controls to be really squirrely, as I would have a fielder chasing the ball, only to have my control switch to a different fielder, seemingly at random. It would have benefited from some AI teammates.

The RPG element of creating your own team is a cool concept, but I couldn't figure it out... all of the 2-letter abbreviations made no sense.

nelson - well i'm glad you gave it a try.  i suppose if you're not a sports gamer and not a baseball guy than even a well made game like stars won't appeal to you.

the gameplay is actually very good relative to when the game was made.. but you do have do get ahold of the nuances of it.

the fun in the rpg part is renaming the players yourself.. making trades...  playing and collecting money, then reinvesting it in your team.

ultimately it got to the point where you would revel in building a team, establishing a rotation and lineup that worked, and then let the computer simulate the games.

In fact, i think i just might fire it up right now!

On your rom or NES? What was the Royals teams like back when this game came out. I would assume much better than they are on these games where they are (rightfully so) rated as last. 03/26/2011

I still have a NES alex, but it's dead to me know that i have the ROMS.. they are better in every way imaginable.

This game does not have an MLB license at all and doesn't even use pretend MLB teams  (this seems insane by today's standards as they just don't make games like that).

They do have a team called the "american dreams" on there that has players named: Babe,  Cy,  Sandy,  Hank,  Johnny, etc.. baseball legends.

game was made in '91 so the royals at that time were still an above average team, but this game isn't about MLB in any way.. it's about just playing an effective straight baseball game and the RPG/create a team component.

Gameplay is realistic other than probably too many home runs and a complete lack of any real pitcher stamina.   Roster sizes are woefully inadequate as well.    LIke any NES game, there were some good ideas and some flaws.

Although you'd better believe at one point I created an '85 Royals-like team... trying to make them mirror as closely as possibly the real team...  while my st. louis roomate did the opposite with the cards...  the result of the series?

Royals 3, Cards 3... then before the deciding 7th game the game "erased" and we'll never know the outcome.

That's awesome. So with your roms, is that on the computer? If so what kind of controller would you have for that? I don't like computer games for the crappy play control of a computer, occasional glitches and the fact that i am sitting in front of my computer screen.

I had all games for the NES in rom form one time but they weren't nearly as fun to me. To me, there is something about turning on the nes, holding the yellow/gray plastic controller and firing it up on the TV that I really enjoy.
